Transporting tiny homes across Victoria often looks straightforward from the outside, but behind the scenes these relocations require careful planning, correct equipment, and structurally sound trailer construction.
Recently, Red Tow was engaged to relocate a 3-axle tiny home from Halls Gap in the Grampians region of Victoria to Little River, a journey of approximately 230 kilometres.
The transport initially progressed without issue. The tiny home was connected using the 70mm tow coupling on the drawbar, and the relocation began like any standard tiny home tow.
However, part way through the journey something unexpected happened.
The drawbar of the tiny home trailer buckled and failed.
When a Tiny Home Trailer Fails on the Road
When the drawbar of a trailer fails, the transport can quickly become a serious roadside recovery situation.
In most cases, if a tiny home drawbar collapses during transport:
• the trailer cannot be towed normally
• the load becomes stranded on the roadside
• a heavy recovery truck with an underlift must be called to recover the structure
• the relocation often stops completely until specialised equipment arrives
Fortunately, in this case the job was already being carried out using the Red Tow Titan heavy tow truck, which is equipped with a powerful underlift and fork attachment designed for heavy vehicle recovery and specialised transport.
Instead of abandoning the job, we were able to reach under the steel subframe of the tiny home with the forks and lift the front of the structure, effectively converting the transport into an underlift tow configuration.
This allowed the relocation to continue safely to its destination in Little River.
A Surprising Discovery
What makes this situation particularly surprising is that the tiny home was built on a registered trailer with a VIN number.
In Australia, this normally means the trailer design has been engineered and approved to comply with Australian trailer standards, including requirements relating to:
• chassis strength
• axle placement
• braking systems
• drawbar design
• overall structural integrity
Because of this, a drawbar failure during a normal highway transport raises important questions about the design and construction of some tiny home trailers.
The Importance of Proper Tiny Home Trailer Design
Tiny homes are very different from typical caravans or small trailers.
They are effectively small houses built on trailer chassis, which means:
• they are heavier
• they have higher wind load
• they place significant stress on the drawbar during towing
• they often travel long distances when being relocated
A properly designed tiny home trailer should include:
• strong longitudinal steel beams running the full length of the structure
• adequate drawbar reinforcement
• proper weight distribution across axles
• structural connections capable of handling dynamic road loads
If these elements are not engineered correctly, problems can occur when the structure is transported.
Why Heavy Towing Capability Matters
Situations like this highlight the importance of using specialised heavy towing equipment when relocating large portable structures.
Red Tow operates the Titan heavy tow truck, which allows us to:
• tow trailers using 50mm or 70mm couplings
• tow using Ringfeder connections
• perform underlift recoveries
• transport damaged or non-towable structures
• handle portable buildings, modular homes and tiny homes
In this case, having the underlift capability already on site meant the job could continue without needing to call in additional recovery equipment.
Tiny Home and Portable Building Transport Across Victoria
Red Tow regularly relocates:
• tiny homes
• portable buildings
• site offices
• modular homes
• oversized trailers
• heavy equipment and machinery
Our specialised equipment and experience allow us to handle both normal relocations and unexpected recovery situations when they occur during transport.
If you are planning to move a tiny home or portable structure anywhere in Victoria, it is important to work with a transport provider who understands both the engineering limitations and recovery requirements of these structures.
