When it comes to tough recoveries, Red Tow doesn’t back down. Our latest job was a perfect example of how experience, the right gear, and pure truck power can get the job done—even when the ground underfoot gives way.
The Call-Out: Heavy Machine Stranded on Deceptive Concrete
What appeared to be a stable concrete pad quickly turned into a trap for a large piece of machinery. The surface looked fine—but lacked proper reinforcement (reo). In our industry, we know that concrete without reo is as reliable as loose gravel under stress. It might look tough, but it won’t hold weight when it matters.
Our team arrived on site with the Titan, one of our most trusted recovery units, and a game plan to extract the machine with minimal delay.
Initial Approach: Letting the Titan Flex Its Muscle
With a double VCH line attached to the recovery point, we engaged the diff lock and eased into the first stage of the pull. The idea was to let the Titan use its raw torque and weight to shift the machine without relying on winching.
For those who know their trucks, the Titan’s no slouch. It’s previously pulled 240 tonnes up at the MS, and it’s equipped with a planetary diff, C2 DS inserts, and a setup built to handle serious loads. Even with modified gear ratios, this machine’s got what it takes.
Backup Plan Ready: Winch System Doubled Up
Every smart operator has a Plan B. We’d already doubled up the winch line and set the spades just in case traction didn’t hold. The idea was to avoid wasting time—if the drive didn’t work, we’d seamlessly switch to a winch recovery and haul the machine out using mechanical advantage.
In the end, it only took a few simple adjustments—blocks under the wheels, first gear engaged, and a bit of coordination with the on-site operator—for the Titan to pull the machine out cleanly.
Why Reinforced Concrete Matters in Off-Road Recovery
This recovery served as another reminder of how deceptive certain surfaces can be. Non-reinforced concrete may seem reliable, but under the pressure of heavy machinery, it disintegrates quickly. At Red Tow, we know what to look for and how to respond when the ground isn’t up to the job.
Teamwork in Action: Communication is Key
With the vehicle free, we asked the machine operator to gently apply the brakes while we spooled the winch back in. These small steps—clear communication, mechanical understanding, and control—are what make the difference between a rough recovery and a smooth one.
