Multi-Task Recovery – Bogged Sideloader Assist in Officer

Even the best-planned container deliveries can go sideways when site conditions aren’t ideal. This week, Red Tow Heavy Recovery was called by our long-term client Container Solutions to assist with a bogged sideloader on a freshly built construction site in Officer, Victoria.

The Container Solutions team had arrived to deliver a fully loaded 40-foot shipping container. The site had just been spread with new gravel over soft sub-soil that hadn’t compacted yet. As the driver manoeuvred into position, the steer wheels sank and the drives began spinning — leaving the loaded sideloader stuck mid-delivery.

At the same time, our Mack Titan Heavy Underlift was already on another job in Bayswater, securing a damaged rigid truck for transport. Rather than unhooking that casualty, our crew assessed the situation and decided to multitask. The Titan’s 20-ton hydraulic winch was still available, giving us just the flexibility needed to respond quickly.

Coordinated Response Between Two Fleets

We dispatched the Titan directly from Bayswater to Officer — still carrying the first casualty safely supported on the underlift. On arrival, our operator set up the winch lines to the bogged sideloader, carefully managing angles and ground pressure to avoid further sinking or strain on the chassis.

With slow, controlled winch power, the sideloader was drawn out of the soft section and repositioned onto stable ground. Once recovered, the truck was able to complete the container delivery as directed.

The entire incident caused only a 90-minute delay and was resolved without damage or compromise to either vehicle.

Example of Red Tow’s Multi-Task Capability

This job perfectly highlights how Red Tow’s fleet and operators are equipped to handle multiple complex recoveries simultaneously. Our Titan Underlift combines the pulling strength of dual winches, precision load control, and the stability required for handling heavy recovery work across Melbourne and regional Victoria.

Where most towing operations would have had to detach the first job or send a separate truck, our setup allowed us to assist another client instantly — maximising uptime and efficiency across the board.

Lessons for Clients and Operators

This Officer recovery also underscores an important reminder for delivery sites: soft, untested or freshly laid gravel is often not suitable for loaded semi-trailers weighing up to 43 ton gross. Ground preparation must be compacted and load-rated before arrival.

Container Solutions’ full Terms & Conditions explain that the client is responsible for ensuring the pickup or delivery site is safe and accessible for heavy vehicles. In cases where a truck becomes bogged or immobilised on site, the cost of recovery is payable by the client.
