A High-Stakes Recovery in a Tight Construction Site
When a fully loaded tipper and quad dog trailer broke down on a steep uphill within a busy Melbourne inner-city construction site, Red Tow was called in to handle one of the most challenging recoveries to date. With limited space, ongoing construction activity, and a massive load, the job required strategic planning and precise execution.
On-Site Assessment and Recovery Planning
Upon arrival, the construction site was still fully operational. Before any action could be taken, our team consulted with the site supervisor and OHNS representative to present a comprehensive recovery plan that ensured safety and efficiency. The truck and trailer had a gross weight exceeding 40 tonnes, but thankfully, our Thornton Tow Truck—rated for up to 85 tonnes on the stinger (under-lift) and a staggering 140 tonnes GCM—was up to the task.
Tackling the Steep Incline and Volvo System Errors
The incline itself posed a major risk, making the heavy multi-combination recovery even more complex. To reduce the strain, the trailer was unloaded before the Volvo mechanics from All Tow addressed the truck’s mechanical issues and electronic system errors. With these challenges resolved, the rig was prepared for towing.
Navigating a Tight Construction Zone
Even with the truck ready, manoeuvring through the site was no easy feat. Gravel surfaces, restricted space, and the massive length of the rig created issues with traction and steering. To maintain control, our team had to make constant adjustments to the under-lift. Upon reaching the site entrance, we coordinated with traffic management to halt both directions of traffic, as the entire width of the road—curb to curb—was required to extract the vehicle.
Inner-City Road Challenges
Once out of the construction zone, new hurdles awaited. Melbourne’s inner-city infrastructure—road barriers, traffic islands, and bicycle-friendly layouts—is not designed to accommodate heavy machinery or large multi-combination vehicles. Navigating through these tight urban roads required careful steering and precise manoeuvring to avoid damage to both the vehicle and city infrastructure.
A Successful Six-Hour Operation
After six hours of strategic execution and non-stop coordination, we successfully delivered the broken-down rig to the client’s mechanic for repairs. Despite the space constraints, heavy load, and unpredictable urban challenges, Red Tow demonstrated expertise, resilience, and precision in yet another high-risk recovery mission.
