Loaded Truck & Trailer Snaps Tailshaft on a Hill – How Red Tow Recovered the Entire Combination Safely

When a loaded Truck & Trailer Tipper snaps its tailshaft mid-climb on a hill, the situation becomes immediately dangerous. The driveline failure leaves the unit without propulsion and with limited braking control, and with a full load onboard, the risk of rolling or further mechanical damage increases significantly. This is exactly the type of high-risk, high-skill heavy recovery job Red Tow is built for.

We received the call after the driver reported a loud crack from underneath the truck as he was climbing. The tailshaft had completely failed, with a section still lodged at the diff. With the truck and trailer stranded on an incline and fully loaded, the priority was stabilisation and control.

On arrival, we secured the entire combination from the front using our heavy underlift equipment. Before any movement was possible, the broken piece of the tailshaft had to be removed from the diff. This is a precision task — removing the fragment ensures nothing can bind, jam, or damage the driveline further during recovery.

Once the driveline was safely separated, the next step was manoeuvring the truck and trailer into a position where the load could be tipped. Using controlled repositioning, we jack-knifed the combination just enough to give the driver access to safely tip the material off the trailer. This reduced weight and eliminated the risk of shifting load during the tow.

With the rig now empty, we connected our auxiliary air and brake controls. This allowed the brakes on both truck and trailer to operate normally, which is critical for recovery of a non-driveable unit. Only then was the combination ready to be towed.

From there, we transported the truck and trailer back to the client’s depot without incident. The entire job was completed safely, efficiently, and without causing any further damage — exactly the standard we aim for on every heavy recovery.

At Red Tow, we specialise in non-driveable heavy vehicles, snapped tailshafts, loaded recoveries, air brake control setups, driveline failures, breakdowns, and complex roadside situations across Melbourne and Victoria. When a truck goes down, you need expertise, experience, and the right equipment on site quickly.
