The truck came off second-best, but luckily, the engine was still running, and the vehicle could have been driven — at least in theory. However, the risk of further damage was too high. Smart Towing for a Medium-Duty Truck

The vehicle in question was a Fuso Fighter Pantech, a versatile medium-duty truck with a box body. These trucks are common across Victoria for general freight, deliveries, and farm work.

Rather than disconnecting the tail shaft (also called the propeller shaft, which transfers power from the transmission to the rear axle), we chose a more efficient method: a front-end lift tow. Navigating Tight Access at the Repair Yard

What is a Lazy Axle?

A lazy axle, also known as a non-driven axle, supports weight but does not receive power from the engine. On light or empty loads, the lazy axle doesn’t contribute much. However, with a bit of creative thinking, we found a way to put it to work.

Using Air Suspension to Our Advantage

With air suspension, we could dump the air from the lazy axle, lowering its height relative to the truck. By also lifting the front of the vehicle slightly more than usual during the tow, we increased clearance for the drive axle and shifted some weight onto the lazy axle. This simple adjustment allowed for better load distribution and ensured nothing was dragging during transport.

Height Checks and Load Security

Before departure, we checked the overall height to ensure we complied with Victoria’s maximum vehicle height of 4.3 metres. Even with the front lifted, we were right on the mark.

We also secured the truck using chains at multiple points, including the front axle and frame, ensuring stability for the entire trip. Air was supplied to the braking system throughout the journey, keeping the truck’s brakes operational and safe.

A Smooth Run to the Repairer

With everything set, we hit the road. The route was mostly freeway — ideal for this type of relocation. Minimal bumps and smooth roads kept the load stable, and the lazy axle carried its share of the weight for once.

Upon arrival, we reversed the Fuso into position at the repairer’s yard without a hitch. The truck arrived clean and undamaged, ready for inspection and repairs.
