Red Tow has completed what we believe to be an Australian first — relocating an OMEGA empty container handler using a heavy underlift tow truck.
Container handlers are large, specialised machines designed to lift and stack shipping containers around container yards, transport depots and logistics facilities. Moving this type of equipment presents a very different challenge from conventional heavy truck towing, requiring the right combination of lifting capacity, towing capacity, experience and precise setup.
For this oversized relocation, Red Tow deployed our Mack Titan heavy recovery tow truck fitted with a Miller Century KB55 underlift.
The Mighty Titan and KB55 Underlift
Our KB55 provides up to 90 tonnes of towing capacity and 24.5 tonnes of retracted lift capacity, giving Red Tow substantial capability when dealing with heavy trucks, machinery and specialised industrial equipment.
The Mack Titan itself was built for serious heavy work. Before joining the Red Tow fleet, the Titan operated in the Queensland mining industry pulling combinations of up to 240 tonnes.
Putting the Titan and KB55 together created an ideal heavy towing combination for this unusual OMEGA container handler relocation.
Once the correct lifting and towing configuration was established, the Titan made easy work of the move.
Heavy Underlift Towing Beyond Trucks
Heavy underlift towing is normally associated with prime movers, rigid trucks, buses and heavy commercial vehicles, but the right equipment can provide solutions for much more specialised transport requirements.
This project demonstrates the versatility of Red Tow’s heavy recovery equipment and our ability to develop practical solutions for unusual machinery that cannot simply be loaded onto conventional transport equipment.
The OMEGA container handler was carefully lifted, secured and transported using the KB55 underlift while managing the additional requirements associated with an oversized machinery relocation.
